Despite 25 being well above the minimum age required for an individual to be able to drive in Australia, there is still the common misconception that you can’t rent a car if you’re below the age of 25.

Whilst no laws prohibit this – unless you are under 21 – the minimum age required to rent a car can vary from rental company to rental company.

We have put together this short guide on what a person should know if they are under the age of 25 and are looking to rent a car.

Can I rent a car if I’m younger than 25?

Yes. If you are under 25, it is possible to rent a car. However, you’ll need to hold a full and valid Australian driver’s licence and have done so for a minimum of 12 months.

Will there be a surcharge?

As a young driver, it is highly likely that when renting a car, you will have to pay a larger surcharge than someone older than you e.g., a parent. This is because younger drivers are considered to have less experience on the road, and so are seen as more likely to be involved in crashes or collisions.

If you’re between the ages of 21 and 24, a Young Driver Surcharge of $15 per day will most likely be applied by your rental company. However, if you’re on a probationary licence, there will be an additional fee of $23.50 per day.

Do rules vary between states?

No. The same rules apply no matter which state you live in or wish to hire a rental car in.

What about insurance?

Not everyone knows this, but when you rent a car, there is always the option to take out car rental excess insurance. This is a straightforward way of gaining extra protection should an accident happen when you’re driving a rental car. There are a variety of companies that offer this, with the minimum age to do so usually ranging from 19 to 21.

Do I have to pay for fuel?

When you pick the car up from a rental company, it will have fuel in the tank. As such, when you return the car, you will be required to refill it to the same level. There can be expensive fees to pay if you return the car with an empty tank, so it’s often much more affordable to refill it at a gas station on your way back to the rental company.

Is a GPS system required?

Some rental companies will require you to use a GPS system when renting a car, which can incur an added fee. As such, if you have your own, the advice is that you bring this with you.
